German Autobahn Network

13,191 kilometers of highway, parts with no speed limit/Infrastructure

The German Autobahn is the federal controlled-access highway system of Germany, spanning approximately 13,191 kilometers and making it one of the longest and densest motorway networks in the world. Roughly 70% of the Autobahn has no permanent speed limit, though an advisory speed of 130 km/h is recommended. The first section, a 20-kilometer stretch between Cologne and Bonn, opened in 1932. The network handles about one-third of all motorized road traffic in Germany. Contrary to popular belief, sections near urban areas do have speed limits, and overall fatality rates are comparable to other European motorways.
