The save icon's physical ancestor/Computing
The 3.5-inch floppy disk, introduced by Sony in 1981, stored 1.44 MB on a flexible magnetic disc inside a rigid plastic shell. At its peak in the 1990s, billions were manufactured annually. Today it is best known as the 'save' icon in software, a reference that confuses anyone born after 2000. A single modern smartphone photo would require about 4 floppy disks.
