Fastest 100m Swim

46.86 seconds of explosive speed through water by Pan Zhanle/Human Records & Feats

The world record for the 100-meter freestyle swim is 46.40 seconds, set by Pan Zhanle of China at the 2024 Paris Olympics. This translates to an average swimming speed of about 2.16 m/s (7.8 km/h). While this may seem slow compared to running, water is roughly 800 times denser than air, creating enormous drag. Elite freestyle swimmers generate about 60 newtons of propulsive force per stroke and take approximately 46 to 50 strokes to complete the distance. The dive start and underwater dolphin kicks off each wall are the fastest phases, with speeds briefly exceeding 3 m/s. Swimming records have fallen steadily with improvements in pool design, lane rope technology, and the now-banned full-body polyurethane suits.
