Farthest Human-Made Object
Voyager 1 is over 24 billion km from Earth, still sending signals home/Collective & Conceptual
Voyager 1, launched by NASA on September 5, 1977, is the most distant human-made object, currently over 24 billion km from Earth and still communicating with us. At that distance, radio signals traveling at the speed of light take over 22 hours to reach Earth. The spacecraft is traveling at about 17 km/s (61,000 km/h) relative to the Sun and entered interstellar space in August 2012, becoming the first human-made object to leave the heliosphere. Its nuclear power source (a radioisotope thermoelectric generator) is slowly decaying and is expected to provide enough power for limited scientific instruments until about 2025. After that, Voyager 1 will continue its silent journey, reaching the vicinity of the star Gliese 445 in about 40,000 years.
