Fangtooth Fish

Owner of the largest teeth relative to body size of any fish/Deep Sea & Ocean Life

The fangtooth fish (Anoplogaster cornuta) has the largest teeth of any fish in proportion to its body size. Its lower fangs are so long that special pockets on either side of the brain accommodate them when the mouth is closed. Found at depths of 200 to 5,000 meters, the fangtooth is one of the deepest-living fish in the ocean. Despite its terrifying appearance, it is only about 18 cm long and is harmless to humans. Adults are dark brown or black, helping them remain invisible in the lightless deep. They can withstand the crushing pressure at depths of 5,000 meters.
