El Capitan
The world's most famous big wall, a vertical granite monolith/Mountains
El Capitan is a vertical rock formation in Yosemite National Park, California, featuring a sheer granite face rising approximately 914 meters from base to summit on its tallest face (the Dawn Wall). It is one of the most prominent rock faces in the world and the premier destination for big-wall climbing. The first ascent of The Nose route was completed by Warren Harding, Wayne Merry, and George Whitmore in 1958 after 47 days of climbing. In 2017, Alex Honnold made history by free-soloing the face without ropes in 3 hours 56 minutes. The granite formed from a pluton roughly 100 million years ago.
