Dynamite Stick

Alfred Nobel's explosive invention that moved mountains/Inventions & Discoveries

Alfred Nobel patented dynamite in 1867 after discovering that nitroglycerin could be stabilized by mixing it with diatomaceous earth. A standard stick of dynamite is about 20 cm long and 3.2 cm in diameter, weighing roughly 190 grams. A single stick releases about 1 megajoule of energy when detonated. Nobel's guilt over dynamite's destructive use in warfare led him to establish the Nobel Prizes.
