Crown-of-Thorns Starfish

A venomous coral-eating starfish with up to 21 arms/Marine Life

The crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci) is a large, venomous starfish that feeds on coral polyps and is one of the greatest threats to coral reefs worldwide. Adults reach 25 to 35 cm in diameter, with 12 to 21 arms covered in sharp, venomous spines up to 5 cm long. A single starfish can consume up to 10 square meters of coral per year. Population outbreaks, possibly linked to nutrient runoff from agriculture, have devastated large sections of the Great Barrier Reef.
