Coco de Mer Seed

The largest seed in the plant kingdom/Biology & Ecosystems

The coco de mer (Lodoicea maldivica) produces the largest seed of any plant, weighing up to 25 kg and measuring about 50 cm long. Found only in the Seychelles, the seed takes 6 to 7 years to mature and another 2 years to germinate. The palm tree itself can grow 34 meters tall and live over 300 years. Before the Seychelles were discovered, the enormous seeds occasionally washed up on distant shores, leading to legends about a mythical underwater palm tree.
