Christ the Redeemer

Rio de Janeiro's open-armed icon atop Corcovado Mountain/Statues & Monuments

Standing atop Corcovado Mountain at 710 meters above sea level, Christ the Redeemer has been overlooking Rio de Janeiro since 1931. The statue is made of reinforced concrete clad in soapstone, chosen because of its durability and workability. Its outstretched arms span 28 meters, making it the world's largest Art Deco sculpture and a universal symbol of welcome.
