Bumblebee Bat

The smallest mammal on Earth by length/Biology & Ecosystems

Kitti's hog-nosed bat (Craseonycteris thonglongyai), commonly called the bumblebee bat, is the smallest mammal in the world by body length, measuring just 29 to 33 mm from head to tail. Found only in limestone caves in Thailand and Myanmar, it weighs about 2 grams, roughly the same as a dime. Its wingspan of 15 cm is modest even for a bat, and its roost colonies rarely exceed 100 individuals. The species was only discovered in 1973.
