Atlantic Bluefin Tuna

The warm-blooded torpedo of the open ocean/Deep Sea & Ocean Life

The Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) is one of the largest and fastest bony fish in the sea, reaching 3 meters in length and 680 kilograms in mass. Unlike most fish, bluefin tuna are warm-blooded, maintaining body temperatures up to 21 degrees above the surrounding water, which gives them the sustained power to swim at speeds up to 20 meters per second (72 km/h). A single large bluefin sold for $3.1 million at Tokyo's Tsukiji fish market in 2019, making it pound-for-pound one of the most valuable animals on Earth.
