Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque)

Istanbul's iconic six-minareted Ottoman imperial mosque/World Landmarks

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque, known as the Blue Mosque for the 20,000 handmade Iznik tiles adorning its interior, was built between 1609 and 1616 during the rule of Sultan Ahmed I. It is unique among Ottoman mosques for having six minarets, which caused controversy at the time as only the mosque in Mecca had that many. The main dome is 23.5 m in diameter and reaches 43 m at its peak. The mosque can accommodate about 10,000 worshippers and remains an active place of worship.
