Blu-ray Disc

100 billion bits etched by blue laser light/Computing

A standard Blu-ray disc stores 25 GB on a single layer using pits just 150 nanometers wide read by a 405 nm blue-violet laser. The data spiral on the disc, if unwound, would stretch about 27 km. The disc spins at up to 10,000 RPM during playback. Dual-layer discs hold 50 GB, and Ultra HD Blu-ray can store up to 100 GB on three layers.
