Bioluminescent Bay (Mosquito Bay)
The brightest bioluminescent bay on Earth in Vieques, Puerto Rico/Nature & Natural Wonders
Mosquito Bay on the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico, holds the Guinness World Record for the brightest bioluminescent bay. The glow is produced by dinoflagellates (Pyrodinium bahamense), microscopic organisms that emit blue-green light when disturbed, at concentrations of up to 700,000 per liter of water. The bay is about 800 m long and 400 m wide, surrounded by mangroves that provide nutrients for the dinoflagellates. Every movement through the water creates trails of ghostly blue light, making nighttime kayaking here one of the most otherworldly natural experiences on Earth.
