The bee hummingbird (Mellisuga helenae) of Cuba is the smallest living bird, measuring just 5 to 6 cm in total length and weighing about 1.8 grams. Its eggs are the size of coffee beans. Despite its tiny size, it can beat its wings up to 80 times per second and its heart rate can reach 1,260 beats per minute during flight. It visits up to 1,500 flowers per day and plays a vital role as a pollinator in Cuban ecosystems.
