The upside-down tree that stores 120,000 liters of water/Plants
The African baobab (Adansonia digitata) is one of the most iconic trees on the continent, with a massive barrel-shaped trunk that can reach 11 meters in diameter. Some specimens are over 2,000 years old. The trunk is spongy and can store up to 120,000 liters of water, allowing the tree to survive prolonged droughts. During the dry season, when leafless, the stubby branches resemble roots, giving rise to the legend that the gods planted it upside down. Baobab fruit is a nutritional superfood rich in vitamin C.
