Staphylococcus aureus

The golden grape-shaped germ on your skin right now/Medicine & Biology

Staphylococcus aureus is a spherical bacterium about 1 micrometer in diameter that lives on the skin and in the noses of about 30% of people without causing any problems. When it gets into wounds, however, it can cause serious infections. Its name means 'golden grape berry,' referring to its round shape and yellowish colonies. MRSA strains of this bacterium are resistant to most antibiotics.
