Azores
Nine volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean/Landforms
The Azores are an autonomous region of Portugal consisting of nine volcanic islands in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, roughly 1,400 kilometers west of mainland Portugal. They sit at the triple junction of the North American, Eurasian, and African tectonic plates, making them one of the most volcanically active regions in the world. Mount Pico on Pico Island, at 2,351 meters, is the highest point in all of Portugal. The total land area is about 2,346 square kilometers across the nine islands. The Azores served as a crucial waypoint for transatlantic navigation from the Age of Exploration onward, and their mild climate produces world-renowned tea, pineapples, and dairy.
