A standard aspirin tablet contains 325 mg of acetylsalicylic acid pressed into a disc about 12 mm in diameter. Aspirin was first synthesized by Bayer in 1897 and remains one of the most widely used medications in the world, with an estimated 40,000 tonnes consumed annually. It thins blood, reduces fever, eases pain, and may help prevent heart attacks.
