Human Appendix

A small pouch off the large intestine with a debated purpose/The Human Body

The vermiform appendix is a narrow, finger-shaped pouch attached to the cecum at the start of the large intestine. Long thought to be vestigial, recent research suggests it may serve as a reservoir for beneficial gut bacteria. Appendicitis, its inflammation, is one of the most common surgical emergencies.
