Amsterdam
A city built below sea level with 100 kilometers of canals/Everyday Places
Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is famous for its concentric ring of canals (grachtengordel), built during the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The canal system includes four main concentric rings: Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht, and Prinsengracht, collectively measuring over 100 kilometers in total length. The city sits an average of 2 meters below sea level, protected by an elaborate system of dikes and pumping stations. Amsterdam has approximately 1,753 bridges (more per square kilometer than Venice), 881,000 inhabitants, and an estimated 880,000 bicycles.
