Amazon River

The world's largest river by volume, draining 40% of South America/Rivers

The Amazon River is the world's largest river by volume of water discharged, releasing approximately 209,000 cubic meters per second into the Atlantic Ocean, more than the next seven largest rivers combined. Its length is debated (6,400-6,992 km, competing with the Nile for longest), and its drainage basin of 7 million square kilometers covers about 40% of South America. During the wet season, the river can be over 48 km wide in some stretches. The Amazon bore (pororoca) is a tidal wave that travels up to 800 km inland.
