The 'Sistine Chapel of Prehistory' in northern Spain/Archaeology & Antiquities
The Cave of Altamira near Santillana del Mar in Cantabria, Spain, contains some of the finest examples of Upper Paleolithic cave art, dating from roughly 36,000 to 13,000 years ago. The painted ceiling of the main chamber features strikingly realistic polychrome bison, horses, deer, and hand stencils using red ochre and charcoal. When first revealed to the academic world in 1880, scholars refused to believe prehistoric people were capable of such sophisticated art. The cave was closed to the public in 2002 to preserve the paintings, with a replica museum nearby.
